Overview: Apprenticeship Training as Licensed Dispensing Optician (LDO)

Apprenticeship training is the time—proven method of producing highly skilled trade workers. It is the process in which a person learns a specific trade, or occupation, through related school courses and job experience.

Becoming an Optician Apprentice is a 6,000—hour commitment taking from three to six years to complete. During this time, supervised training under a licensed optician, optometrist, or physician would be expected.

The curriculum covers:

  • Decision making based on established guidelines and protocol

  • Skilled use of machines. as well as large and small instruments

  • Communication and care of eye patients

    • Options for the patient

    • Benefits to the patient

  • Lens preparation

    • Cutting., grinding

    • Polishing, mounting

  • Fitting of contact lenses

Upon successful completion of the program and certification of your hours, you may apply for and take the state exam administered by the Department of Health to earn the credential of Licensed Dispensing Optician (LDO).

Currently, this is the only program that is pre-approved by the JATC and L & I and is offered only at Highline Community College.
