Chapter 7: Improving Interpersonal Relationships

1.        What is meant by communication climate?

2.        What are confirming responses?  Disconfirming responses?

3.        What are escalatory conflict spirals? De-escalatory conflict spirals?

4.        What are Jack Gibb’s supportive and defensive engendering behaviors? Give an example from your life of each of the behaviors.

5.        Define the five ways individuals might handle conflict?  Give a personal example of each.

6.        What are the characteristics of an assertive message? Nonassertive messages?  Aggressive messages?  Passive messages?

7.        What observations does our text make with reference to gender and conflict styles?

8.        Explain the different approaches discussed in our text relevant to conflict resolution (i.e. win-lose; lose-lose; compromise; win-win)
