BUSINESS DIVISION
Criteria for Tenure
The
Business Division has developed the following criteria as essential for
consideration by the Working Committee in its evaluation of the instructor
seeking tenure. The Working
Committee should recognize and respect the diversity of individual
characteristics and the need to provide varying styles of instruction and
personal qualities among our faculty. Quantitative
and qualitative evaluation on the basis of these criteria is left to the
professional judgment of the Working Committee within guidelines established by
the college.
I.
EFFECTIVE TEACHING
Faculty
shall provide evidence of quality teaching and a concern for improving the
quality of their teaching.
Effective
teachers:
A.
challenge
learners intellectually;
They invite students to ask questions, confront
limits, recognize complexities, discriminate values, pursue alternatives, see
new possibilities, and seek connections.
B.
communicate
effectively;
They plan and organize, express expectations clearly,
listen carefully, remain available
to meet with students individually, and act with
respect, enthusiasm, and empathy
towards students.
C.
show
commitment to student learning;
They create an interactive, cooperative, mutually
respectful environment, use various
methods of teaching and assessment, and they are able
to demonstrate (consistent with
College student outcomes expectations) that course
objectives are met.
D.
remain
current in their disciplines/programs;
They design, review, and revise courses, reflecting
developments in their academic and/or professional/technical areas.
E.
demonstrate
personal and professional integrity;
They are professional and ethical in selecting
content, interacting with students and colleagues, and in assessing self.
F.
are
mindful of technology advances in their academic and/or occupational area and
utilize technology in and out of the classroom.

II. PROFESSIONAL
CONDUCT
Faculty
shall conduct themselves professionally by communicating and performing duties
and responsibilities in a reasonably and timely manner.
A.
The
instructor must meet, without being limited to, individual responsibilities
delineated by the institution in a negotiated contract between the College and
HCEA especially as it pertains to the section on the responsibility of all
faculty and the section on guidelines for full-time faculty teaching loads,
college catalog and various policy statements of the Board of Trustees.
B.
The
instructor must meet assigned classes as scheduled in the official class
schedule or seek class coverage or reschedule classes as approved by the
department coordinator and/or division chair.
C.
The
instructor must establish satisfactory and professional relationships with
students with respect to availability for consultation, conduct of classes and
grading policy. The instructor must
be available at least during posted office hours for the purpose of advising and
assisting students.
D.
The
instructor must maintain a professional rapport with colleagues and should
participate in-group deliberations that contribute to the growth and development
of students, department, division and the College.
E.
The
instructor must maintain professional proficiency within a discipline and should
continue professional growth and development as an educator
F.
The
instructor should maintain a close working relationship with industry or field
representatives and be familiar with current concepts, practices and industry or
discipline trends and needs.

III.
PROFESSIONAL ENRICHMENT
Faculty
will show evidence of staying current in their discipline or program and
demonstrate an expertise in pedagogy. As
evidence of professional enrichment, the instructor may:
A.
Participate
in faculty development opportunities related to the instructor’s discipline,
program, or methods of teaching;
B.
Work in
business and industry related to his/her discipline or program or academic area;
C.
Design,
review, and revise courses to reflect developments in his/her academic and/or
professional/technical areas.

IV.
SERVICE
Faculty
shall provide evidence of service to the college and their professions.
A.
College
service includes advising current and prospective students; individual
discussion or conferencing with students; participating in committee work and
curriculum development; performing appropriate administrative tasks; fostering
collegiality among faculty; supporting student-centered extra curricular
activities; speaking to student groups; recruiting and recommending students;
participating in community activities and outreach as an extension of the
College.
B.
Professional
service includes participating in professional organizations and accrediting
activities; serving on regional/national/international committees and boards;
giving presentations or lectures, doing field research, authoring publications,
and exploring innovative pedagogy.

V.
ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES
The
Working Committee will seek other recommendations or evaluations.
These shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
A.
Quarterly
reports by each member of the Working Committee evaluating the probationer’s
classroom performance and addressing professional conduct, professional
enrichment, and service.
B.
Quarterly
student evaluations on college/division-approved evaluation forms for each
class.
C.
A written
evaluation from the Division Chair during quarters 1, 4 and 7 of the tenure
process.
D.
Some
examples of input the Working Committee may include are colleague evaluations,
department coordinator evaluations, visits by probationer to classes taught by
other faculty, quarterly self-evaluations and department evaluations.

All
reports and recommendations must be submitted according to the timelines
established by the Tenure Review Committee.
