PREREQUISITES
The prerequisites for CIS 220 are CIS 218 or familiarity with basic database
concepts and terminology.
DESCRIPTION
CIS 220 uses MySQL, an open-source DBMS, to learn the relational model and structured
query language. Students will design
and create a MySQL database throughout the quarter. The course will cover the
following topics:
 | Database terminology |
 | Review of database design and ER modeling |
 | Structured Query Language (SQL) |
 | DDL: CREATE, ALTER, DROP |
 | DML: SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE |
 | Indexes |
 | Table joins |
 | Nested queries |
 | Transactions |
 | Introduction to triggers and stored procedures |
GRADING
| Blackboard Quizzes | 10 points each |
| Assignments | 30 points each |
| Pop quizzes and in-class exercises | 1-10 points each |
| Final Exam | 100 points |
All percentage grades are converted to decimal grades based on a
conversion scale. You are encouraged to
frequently check your grades in Blackboard. Instructions for logging in to Blackboard are at
http://flightline.highline.edu/icchelp/bb. If you find an error or an omission in your grades, please contact
the instructor immediately.
QUIZZES
 | Chapter quizzes will be posted in Blackboard. All quizzes are open book. |
 | Each quiz consists of ten multiple choice questions. Each question has one correct answer. |
 | When taking a quiz in Blackboard, you may not leave a quiz and then return to it. If you need to
visit another Web site while taking a quiz, open another browser window. When you have finished
taking a quiz, click Submit. You will receive immediate feedback. |
 | Quizzes will be taken outside of class. You may take the quiz at any time
before the posted deadline. Once a quiz expires, you will not be able to
take it. All quiz deadlines are posted on the course
schedule. |
 | You will have 15 minutes to complete each quiz. While you will be notified of the time remaining in the
status bar, Blackboard will not automatically stop and submit your quiz. You are responsible for stopping
on time. If you are over time by more than 30 seconds, your quiz score will not be counted.
|
 | The lowest quiz score at the end of the quarter will count as extra credit. |
POLICIES
 | Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date due. Late assignments will not be accepted,
except with a late pass. You will receive two late passes at the
beginning of the quarter. Each pass may be used for one class period. So, for
instance, if an assignment is due on Monday, you may turn it in on Wednesday
with one late pass, or on Friday with two late passes. After Friday,
the assignment would not be accepted. |
 | I do not condone academic dishonesty in any form. Students may not copy work from each other or from
any outside source. While students may discuss assignments, you are expected to complete your own work.
If you are suspected of plagiarizing on an assignment or cheating on an exam, you will receive zero credit
and the Dean of Students will be notified. |
 | Cell phones and pagers must be turned off while in the classroom. |
 | Regular attendance and participation are required to succeed in this course. If you miss a class, you are
responsible for any missed announcements, handouts, or lecture material. It is highly recommended that you
make arrangements with a classmate to pick up handouts and take notes for you if you are absent. |
 | Do not use computers during lecture unless you are taking notes. During class, computers are to be used only
for course-related work, not for checking email, playing games or surfing the Web. These activities are
distracting to your classmates and disrespectful to the instructor. |
RESOURCES
 | There are a number of helpful database resources on my
Resources page. If you find others, please let me know! |
 | The Blackboard forum is an excellent place to post questions and collaborate with your peers! |
 | I am always available to answer questions of a personal nature (e.g. grades) via email. However, questions that
might benefit the class should be posted to the forum. |
SPECIAL NEEDS
If you need course adaptations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information to share with the
instructor, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please provide the instructor
with the letter of accommodation you have received from the Office of Access Services, located in Building 6 in the
Student Development Center.
