Installing a Web Server, PHP, and MySQL

PHP data types and operators

Functions and control structures (decisions and loops)

Strings and formatting

NOTE:                 This course requires an average of ten to fifteen hours per week outside of class, therefore students must either have a personal computer with the necessary tools installed or have sufficient access to the computer lab. If you do not put in the necessary time, you will not succeed!

PREREQUISITES:     The prerequisite for CSci 116 is CSci 115, CSci 142, or any other introductory programming course. Students may substitute programming experience for a course. (See the instructor for an entry code.) Students should have basic familiarity with variables, operators, decisions and loops. It is highly recommended that students have a typing speed of at least 30 wpm.

GRADING

Quizzes   10 points each
Assignments and labs 10-30 points each
Midterm 50 points
Final Exam 100 points

All percentage grades are converted to decimal grades based on a conversion scale. You are encouraged to frequently check your grades in Blackboard. Instructions for logging in to Blackboard are at http://flightline.highline.edu/icchelp/bb. If you find an error or an omission in your grades, please contact the instructor immediately.

QUIZZES:

Weekly quizzes will be posted in Blackboard. All quizzes are open book.

Each quiz consists of ten questions -- true/false, multiple choice, and fill-in-the-blank. Each question has one correct answer.

When taking a quiz in Blackboard, you may not leave a quiz and then return to it. If you need to visit another Web site while taking a quiz, open another browser window. When you have finished taking a quiz, click Submit. You will receive immediate feedback. Make sure that your grade is recorded in the gradebook (Tools menu - My Grades in Blackboard).

Quizzes will be taken outside of class. Quizzes for each week will expire on Sundays at midnight, but you may take a quiz anytime before its expiration.

You will have 10 minutes to complete each quiz. While you will be notified of the time remaining in the status bar, Blackboard will not automatically stop and submit your quiz. You are responsible for stopping on time. If you are over time by more than 30 seconds, your quiz score will not be counted.

You may retake a quiz as many times as you like until it expires.

POLICIES:

Assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date due. Late assignments will not be accepted, except with a late pass.

I do not condone academic dishonesty in any form. Students may not copy work from each other or from any outside source. While students may discuss assignments, you are expected to complete your own work. If you are suspected of plagiarizing on an assignment or cheating on an exam, you will receive zero credit and the Dean of Students will be notified.

Cell phones and pagers must be turned off while in the classroom.

Regular attendance and participation are required to succeed in this course. If you miss a class, you are responsible for any missed announcements, handouts, or lecture material. It is highly recommended that you make arrangements with a classmate to pick up handouts and take notes for you if you are absent.

Do not use computers during lecture unless you are taking notes. During class, computers are to be used only for course-related work, not for checking email, playing games or surfing the Web. These activities are distracting to your classmates and disrespectful to the instructor.

RESOURCES:

There are a number of helpful Java resources on my Links page. If you find others, please let me know!

The Blackboard forum is an excellent place to post questions and collaborate with your peers!

I am always available to answer questions of a personal nature (e.g. grades) via email. However, questions that might benefit the class should be posted to the forum.

SPECIAL NEEDS:      If you need course adaptations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information to share with the instructor, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please provide the instructor with the letter of accommodation you have received from the Office of Access Services, located in Building 6 in the Student Development Center.
