Mission Statement
In the Highline Community College Speech Department highly
qualified, creative, and talented instructors will coach students to develop
and use competent intrapersonal, interpersonal, group process, and public
communication skills.
Goals & Activities
- In order to accomplish our mission most effectively, we hire a faculty
that is creative, qualified and talented, and use student evaluations, peer
observations, and other feedback to be sure that instructional quality and
creativity is maintained
- We maintain a qualified, creative, and talented faculty by finding relevant
professional development opportunities for each so that each develops to
full potential.
- All faculty collaborate on the development of Speech 100 each quarter,
providing students with an integrated, consistent introduction to communication
theory, regardless of the section of Speech 100 in which they are registered.
- Faculty assess student competence on the basis of motivation, knowledge,
and skills, using common assessment tools and rubrics for all sections of
Speech 100, providing a consistency of evaluation across all sections.
- Faculty offer specialized classes in Interpersonal Communication, Intercultural
Communication, and Public Speaking fall, winter, and spring quarters, providing
students with opportunities to develop rich and varied real-life communication
skills by integrating service-learning into each course.
