Learning Outcomes
ABE//ESL Department
Mission Statement:
The ABE/GED/ESL Department provides the diverse and
under-served populations with the services, training,
knowledge, and skills needed to carry out the roles and
responsibilities as workers, family and community members.
Department Objectives:
1. Promote literacy at Highline Community College and in the
community at large;
2. Recruit talented, dedicated, and qualified faculty and
staff who reflect our diverse community;
3. Refine the evaluation procedures for faculty and staff to
ensure quality performance and instruction;
4. Provide on-going professional development to reflect the
most recent and effective instructional techniques and
materials; and
5. Promote transitions to more advanced educational
opportunities for our students, with an emphasis on
technical and job training opportunities.

Economics Department
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Department of Economics is to offer a
high quality, comprehensive program that meets the economics
education needs of the diverse student population of
Highline Community College
Department Objectives:
1. Offer an array of classes dealing with economic behavior,
issues and institutions;
2. Maintain communication and coordination among department
faculty members regarding student learning outcomes and
assessment;
3. Maintain communication and coordination with on-campus
and transfer programs for which economics is a requirement;
and
4. Facilitate the on-going professional development of
department faculty members, especially in the areas of
pedagogical approaches and instructional technology.

Human Services Technology
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Human Services Program is to provide a
high quality education to the diverse student population in
the program so that they will have the knowledge, skills,
and professional characteristics to be successful human
service professionals.
Departmental Objectives:
1. Provide learning opportunities for updated knowledge,
skills, ethics, and values in the field;
2. Keep a flexible and resilient program structure to keep
up with a rapidly changing profession;
3. Retain students in the program and encourage /assist
students’ further educational/vocational goals.
4. Increase awareness of the program in the community
through connections with agencies, organizations, and
schools, participation in community causes and events, and
any additional opportunities for outreach;
5. Maintain a qualified and effective instructional staff;
6. Increase access to courses by providing alternative
formats and scheduling options; and
7. Build and utilize an effective program advisory committee.
