Student Learning Outcomes
Drama Department
Mission Statement:
The Drama Department is strongly committed to providing all
students with a well-developed program of study which
includes beginning and advanced courses for students seeking
a career in theatre and related areas (e.g. film,
television) and for students wishing to broaden their
knowledge and appreciation of drama and theatre arts.
Department Objectives:
1. Endeavor to put theater events in the forefront of campus
life;
2. Hire and maintain faculty especially skilled in one
of the performance areas (e.g. directing, acting or design)
and have a rich background in history, aesthetics,
philosophy and other cultural arts;
3. Provide an array of courses with increasing challenge and
varied performance opportunities;
4. Work with individual students and small groups to help
prepare students for competitive auditions;
5. Revise and review current trends and departures in the
practice of the art and craft of theater;
6. Instruct students in the core works of dramatic
literature, hence promoting comprehension and intellectual
vigor;
7. Explore and develop intercultural and multi-cultural
theatrical experiences, pieces and styles and bring them to
the audience and the classroom through performance and/or
discussion;
8. Explore and develop ways to integrate parts of the
departmental curriculum with other courses where this would
be of value to students;
9. Reach out to the community and inspire or delight them
through performance; and
10. Inspire audiences and students to commit to and see
works of great value and beauty in all their arts,
especially live theater.

Journalism Department
Mission Statement:
Communication is the key to living a successful life. Highly
qualified, creative, and talented instructors will provide a
student-centered curriculum to enable students to improve
their research, communication, and writing skills, and to
understand the communication process in a more
technologically oriented world.
Department Objectives:
1. Recruit a creative and diverse faculty committed to
ongoing professional development in their fields and in
their classrooms;
2. Create a learning community and maintain a diverse
faculty that is qualified, creative, and committed to
education;
3. Provide a curriculum that addresses mass
communication---its changing technologies, cultures and
societal attitudes; and 4. Offer students the opportunity to
develop an appreciation and understanding of the interaction
of mass media and culture and to produce one of the best
college newspapers in the country.

Speech Department
Mission Statement
The mission of the Speech Department is to coach students to
develop and use competent intrapersonal, interpersonal,
group process and public communication skills for use in
diverse and multicultural environments.
Department Objectives:
1. Maintain a faculty that is qualified, creative, and
talented;
2. Offer a developmental Speech 80 course, multiple sections of Speech 100 (Basic Course) each
quarter and offer specialized classes (including hybrid/on-line
formats, Speech 200, 210, 213) quarterly;
3. Provide students with an integrated, consistent
introduction to communication theory, regardless of the
section of Speech 100 in which they are registered;
4. Provide students with opportunities to develop rich and
varied real-life communication skills;
5. Integrate service learning opportunities into all 200
level courses; and
6. Strengthen student and faculty technology skills via
course support websites, Blackboard, PowerPoint, and hybrid
courses;
7. Maintain and continue to enhance the department’s student
learning assessment activities; and
8. Continue to develop and promote the "Communication
Competence in the Workplace" Certificate.

World Languages
Mission Statement:
The World Languages Department provides students with the
skills and knowledge to develop communicative and cultural
competence in an increasingly global society.
Department Objectives:
1. Provide a curriculum equivalent to first
two years of four-year institutions and specialized courses
suitable for transfer, career, and recreational purposes;
2. Select course materials that incorporate a communicative
approach, present a global and diverse perspective, promotes
critical thinking, and help develop an understanding into
the relationship of language and culture;
3. Incorporate appropriate technologies for teaching and
learning;
4. Provide continuing opportunities for professional
development for all faculty; and
5. Encourage and support the acquisition of linguistic and
cultural literacy outside the classroom.

Writing
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Writing Department is to assess students’
writing accurately, place them in courses appropriate to
their skill levels, grade their work in a realistic manner,
and prepare them to be successful as writers in other
college and university courses, in occupational situations
and in their public and personal lives.
Department Objectives:
1. Choose the best possible placement instruments;
2. Design self-placement documents to let student know where
they will have the best success, given their skills and
needs; use exit assessment for key courses to insure that
students move to the next course with proper preparation;
3. Continue refining strategies for assessing student
ability at the conclusion of certain key courses;
4. Continue working toward consensus among department
members in the area of scoring standards;
5. Make every attempt to expose students to a wide variety
of cultures and to foster a respect for diversity; and
6. Work toward producing students who can deal critically
with ideas rather than develop merely a technically
proficient essay.

Visual Communication
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Visual Communication Department is to
prepare students for employment in Graphic Design and
Electronic Media.
Department Objectives:
1. Provide instruction that promotes creativity, critical
thinking and problem solving;
2. Provide relevant training that utilizes appropriate,
updated technology and equipment;
3. Support a learning/teaching environment that encourages
everyone to strive, create and succeed;
4. Include practical work related learning into the
curriculum; and
5. Provide students with career advising and networking
opportunities.
