Meeting began at 3:10 p.m. in room 410 of the Library.

A brief discussion was held about the turnover of members and the ending of terms.  Several members’ term will be expiring at the end of spring quarter.

For the first item of business, Vicki Ropp distributed forms containing the “Old Version of College Wide Outcomes” and a draft version of “Philosophical Rationale for Student Learning Outcomes”.   A note about the General Recommendations of the Accreditation Evaluation Committee was also available.

Discussion was started about the choice of 5 outcomes in place of  7 on the current list.  Vickie stated that these 5 draft outcomes would be taken to other groups on campus for discussion.  The first step in the Outcomes Assessment is currently taking place with departments starting their assessment project.  The college-wide outcomes will be promoted as a focus for all divisions/departments/faculty.

An example was given by a description of how Speech 100 instructors have a common rubric to assess a persuasive speech and the department has 35 common questions on all sections of Speech 100 finals.  The data is being collected and analyzed.  Vickie stated that Pierce College is developing a rubric that may be used throughout all their course in the future.

The discussion emphasized the purpose of the list was to help focus on assessing outcomes to assist students in learning, and improving through their studies.  The focus should not be just more work for everyone.  In future years, methods might be developed to assist in collecting data.  General agreement was expressed for the list of 5 Student Learning Outcomes.

The committee thanked Vickie for coming to discuss this matter.

For the second item of business, the issue of the catalog description of the AA degree was discussed.  The committee’s former discussions and recommendations are not printed in the catalog, which is the binding document.  The ICRC description did not include the former discussion points.  It was suggested that the Senate accept the ICRC version.  Jeff Wagnitz stated that the Science area of the AA degree was clarified by the Science Department and that wording would be changed in the catalog.  Jeff will email members the statement to be included in the new catalog and the Senate will consider this matter at the next meeting.

Jeff Wagnitz announced that the DTA – AA- Nursing BSN is the first to be approved.  There will be a teleconference in May about this and he will make sure some members of the Senate are notified so they can attend.

Phil Droke announced that there would be a public hearing at HCC on April 12 3:00-5:00 p.m. to comment about new draft rules for state minimum admission requirements at WA public 4-year schools.

Next meeting of the Faculty Senate will be April 20th.

Meeting adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
