Academic Dishonesty
Phil Droke checked with Dr. Bermingham and stated it was approved that we provide a 10 to 15 minute information session on academic dishonesty at the orientation session, fall quarter, 2003.
Jacob Sneva was present at the Faculty Senate meeting to talk about the student orientation during fall quarter. The Faculty Senate committee chaired by Gloria Rose Koepping generated a handout with suggestions for orientation including two or three workshops which could be offered at different times during the first week, not all in one day. This would occur during the first week of school rather than during the week before class starts as not enough students show up during this week to make orientation truly worth while. Data would be kept on attendance. Discussion ensued on what faculty would like to see happen during this time. Talks from Team Highline and Faculty department heads on topics relevant to student interests as well as different campus organizations could be presented as part of an information fair. Emphasis could also be on having a more traditional approach with campus "rituals" and more structure for students.
Faculty Senate Elections
Phil Droke announced the opening of nominations for Faculty Senate officers, specifically President, Vice President, Secretary and two at-large officers and also representatives from each division. Phil Droke expressed his interest in continuing as President, Glen Avantaggio expressed his interest in continuing as Vice President and Judy Johnson-Wise expressed her interest in continuing as Secretary. Send nominations to Phil Droke and John Pfeffer. Phil will get email out on faculty senate nominations.
Teaching Seminar
Phil Droke announced an upcoming seminar, to be held at Green River Community College in October, 2003, the third weekend in October. The seminar will be on Tips and Tools for Teaching, costing $100.00 tuition. There will be 4 sessions in the morning and 4 sessions in the afternoon. Derek Greenfield will be one of the presenters. Phil also suggested we consider presenting a seminar such as this at Highline.
Gwen Spencer gave further input on the academic probation policy at Highline, emphasizing that six credits or more attempted meant ‘completed or attempted’, even if a student dropped some classes as it could be a good decision on the part of a student to drop some courses. Now, registration can catch all people who ‘attempt’ six or more credits, even if courses are dropped. Faculty senate members intended that if you completed a course it meant that you passed the course. The word, enrolled, might be a better word choice and faculty senate members did not intend that if classes were dropped, the student would be penalized.
