1.  Registration Issues:  Becky Riverman was a t the Senate meeting because the Psychology Dept. had issues concerning registration.  Rod Fowers asked how did students get into classes when they did not have the proper prerequisites.  Who gave them entry codes?  When students withdraw on the web, there is no paperwork.  Rod then gave examples of two students registered for Winter quarter who did not meet prerequisites.  Becky asked that she be emailed with these types of problems so she can investigate and correct issues of this type.  Phil Droke asked if there was a way to fix this process so it did not break down.  Gwen Spencer added that the sheer numbers of students with problems relating to advising and entry code issues grows.  Becky Riverman mentioned that once an entry code is sued, it can't be  used again.  Also, the present  computer program comes from CIS and can not be revised easily.  Rebecca Sliger added that students should be directed more and more to register via the web.  Also discussed was student overloads in classes.  Rebecca asked if faculty could be given special stamps for use.  John Lindsay also mentioned the issue of secured forms.  Alicja Baker emphasized that an entry code could work to prevent students from abusing our systems and classes with students who overload the class, ie, a class opened to 31 students and in fact ends up with 40 students.  Becky Riverman said that some departments have students register but do not have prerequisites so that entry codes can be assigned to students.

 2.  CiIS Issues.  CIS issues are slow to be remedied via software.  Rebecca Sliger stated that we are trying to work a problem that we have no control over.  Jeff Wagnitz said CIS is refusing to do more right now as this system will not last for more than 2 years.  Phil Droke emphasized that the State is moving more toward     amalgamation of these systems.  Gwen Spencer stated that Highline has more prerequisites required for classes. more so than any other Community College in the State.  Rebecca responded that prerequisites  are well worth the effort.

3.  Waiting List.  Becky Riverman pointed out that we have shifted from a touch tone system to another one, at Highline.  When classes are registered for on the web, the computer will tell students that the class is full and ask if the student wants to be wait-listed.  Faculty must decide the cut-off point for students, ie, the number that will be on the wait list.   Also, volunteers are wanted to test a new system for registration.  Spring quarter, a few divisions will participate in testing this new schema.  Most community colleges are using wait lists and like it.  Also, the wait lists check for all pre requisites, a good added feature.  Rod Fowers asked  approximately what percentage of students are using the web site.  The response was, about 60%.  Katie Gulliford also emphasized that there are several types of wt. lists.  There are different methods for dealing with this issue rather than dropping students.  Faculty senate members will have more information on this topic before the 1-27-04 faculty meeting.  So, members  will have time to gather data, put information together for the January meeting of the committee.

Ruth Frickle, Rebecca Sliger and Katie Gulliford were thanked by President, Phil Droke for doing an excellent job.

Respectfully submitted,
