1.
Ivan Gorne sent out a pamphlet
on how to deal with students in distress.
2.
Faculty Senate members agreed that the AAS-T degree is an option for
students at Highline.
If a department wants to require credits in addition to generally
required credits for an associate degree, this would need to come back to the
Faculty Senate for approval.
Faculty Senate members agreed we can send out the notice of this new
degree and the requirements to other departments and programs.
It was moved, seconded and passsed
that members favored adoption of the AAS-T degree at Highline.
2.
Plagiarism on campus:
Rod Fowers brought up the plagiarism issue and Phil Droke suggested we do
something during orientation week, fall quarter, in order to change the campus
climate where
plagiarism and reporting is concerned.
Rerbecca Sliger mentioned that it was important to have a reporting
system where faculty did not fear reporting plagiarism.
Gloria Rose Koepping stated that faculty members have become angry in the
past because nothing was done in a timely manner, secondary to reporting.
Rebecca Sliger also stated that faculty has the power to give a zero as a
test grade and it is important to retain this power.
A punitive approach should not be taken with first offenders but could be
taken with repeat offenders.
Tracy Brigham emphasized that faculty need to be consistent on this issue
and Rod Fowers asked if Toni Castro educated repeat offenders as to the
seriousness of the offense.
Rebecca Sliger offered the idea of a possible ethics class for students
and Rod Fowers emphasized the need for an attitudinal shift, not punishment.
Rebecca mentioned the possibility of exploring ethics in different
countries and cultures within the context of the Globalism educational
requirement. Also
mentioned was putting information in syllabi about academic dishonesty and
procedures for dealing with this issue and putting this information on a
separate web page such as writing across the curriculum.
Gloria
Rose Koepping and a committee will put more together on the academic dishonesty
issue and Phil Droke will contact Jack Bermingham about the possibility of
discussing this issue at the first faculty meeting of the academic year.
