Old Business

The Faculty Senate Constitution was discussed again.  Article 7, part D which mentions the P, R and R committee has no written procedures in the current version of the Constitution.   Article 2, Part D which allows for a broad focus of faculty concerns and issues that could come before the Senate for discussion was also questioned as not necessary.  Since the Senate only had feedback from 2 divisions (8 faculty) about what their members feel about these sections, further feedback was sought from the unrepresented divisions.  The eight faculty opinions we did consider ran the gamut from, “It seems odd that the faculty would do this." to” I do see it as a responsibility.  If the Senate doesn’t do it then  who will?”

There was some Senate discussion about rewriting the procedures for the PR and R committee that would not need faculty approval.  Possibly we could select 4 Senators from the Senate to hear the case, instead of the entire 10 Senators.

Additionally, it was related that one Administrator was concerned that Faculty not give up the PR and R committee, as they saw Faculty Relations as part of our job and they didn’t think it wise to abrogate that duty.

We concluded this discussion with Phil asking the Senators to go back to their divisions to get additional feedback.  We need more information from the rest of the Faculty.

New Business

Eric Baer representing  the Pure and Applied Science Division came with a request for the Senate to change the Science Distribution definition of what constitutes a lab science course and how many credits of lab science would be required for the A.A. degree.

The proposed changes --- A course, in order to meet the lab-science requirement, must:

    * Meet outcomes for lab sciences as determined by the Pure and Applied Sciences Division.

    * Have pre-algebra or higher math class as a pre-requisite.

    * Must be part of at least a 5-credit course or, in the case where lab and a lecture are separated, a 5-credit pair of courses.

    * A laboratory learning component must be a significant part of the course.

In addition, for a student to satisfy the lab science requirement in courses with a separated lab and lecture, he or she must receive credit in both the lab and lecture portions.

Informational Items

Chair Phil Droke also provided a handout from the State Common Course Numbering Committee.  It laid out three options for implementing the new state mandated common numbering system by Summer 2007.  The committee is gathering input and feedback this Fall Quarter 2005.

The next and last Faculty Senate meeting for Fall quarter will be on November 30th, 2005.

Meeting adjourned at 4:02 p.m.
