1. Faculty Senate President began discussing the upcoming graduation ceremony which will be in the Tacoma Dome. He encouraged everyone to attend.
2. New Business:
Rod Fowers had questions about the college’s sexual predator policy. He asked how involved faculty senate is in this issue. Policy issues were discussed, including the protocol that there are 3 levels of sex offenders that must register. Highline then posts their pictures with identifying data in different places on the campus. Class members in the classes where the sex offender will be enrolled will also be notified.
Jeff Wagnitz stated that he thought everything came through the faculty senate and Phil Droke said he could bring this issue up with the policy counsel.
Policies can also be found on Highline’s home page. Laura Saunders and Connie Johnson keep these up.
Rod Fowers asked which committees are under the faculty senate and which are under to be found other places? Phil Droke responded that if the committee is academic in nature, it is ours. Also cautioned was to avoid having committees with all neophytes on them. Glen emphasized that we have one tenured faculty member on a committee, always. He also mentioned using a lottery as suggested by Rebecca Sliger to keep things fair. It was moved. Seconded and voted that we use a lottery as a means of ensuring fairness where committee membership was concerned.
Ruth Frickle asked where the senate was concerning the issue of Professional Development Day. Ruth Windhover shred that this issue is being negotiated via the union contract. Phil Droke emphasized that we can give suggestions to the Professional Development committee.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned
Respectfully submitted,
Judy Johnson-Wise, Secretary
