Eric Scott,

1.      Topic:  Meeting Cancellation

Phil Droke, Chair, announced that the 11-3-04 Faculty Senate meeting will be cancelled as the all-college Faculty Meeting will be held at this time, on this date.

2.      Topic:  Scholastic Review Committee – Eric Scott

Eric Scott from the Scholastic Review Committee attended our Senate meeting to explain the functioning and policies of the SRC.  This committee does seek outside counsel if needed.  Glen Avantaggio, Vice Chair, distributed a written statement of the SRC that explained the types of problems students tend to have, resulting in their being reviewed by the committee and the committee membership.  Alicja Baker also added to this discussion about relevant membership representation on the committee. She suggested term limits for  the membership of 2 years.  Also suggested was to broaden the at-large representation.  Gloria Rose Koepping added the preference not to eliminate membership in the middle of a term, to show consideration.  Phil Droke asked how the math position membership is selected.  Rod Fowers asked if the division or department recommend someone.  Ruth Frickle suggested that there be some specific positions and the others be at large positions.  For example, 5 at large but not two from each division.  Consensus was that 5 people must come from departments with the goal of diversity of input.

Eric emphasized that certain departments tended to end up with their students in front of the SRC.  He thought 5 at large members was not needed, with 8 being  the total committee membership.  Glen Avantaggio asked how we could keep at large positions from coming from the same areas,  Ruth Frickle questioned what is the at large position supposed to do?  Would they be “good” thinkers who also like dealing with the committee’s issues?  Consensus was that there be 5 dedicated positions, with 2 positions for divisions not represented and with 2 at large positions.  The 5 dedicated positions would be Writing, Athletics, Math, Reading and Counseling, with 9 total members and Toni Castro also added for 10, total. Also suggested was making Toni Castro an ad-hoc member.  Glen Avantaggio suggested that we tell Eric to take these issues to the committee first and then complete all changes by spring quarter, 2005.

Respectfully Submitted,
