Old Business

Student cheating, forging signatures, wait-listing

Phil Droke reported that generally speaking, data is being kept on student cheating.  Rod Fowers stated that Becky Riverman had been dealing with a case of a student who got into a class by forging an instructor’s name and Becky was on top of this issue.  Ron Sabedo shared that the Business Department had volunteered for wait-listing and that probably more department will in the future.  However,  so far, no parameters have been delineated such as cut off dates and how long the lists will be.

New Business

Phil Droke shared with faculty that a faculty member emailed Dr. Bell concerning the no smoking policy.  Tied to this in the minds of some was the idea of limiting not only smoking but also the wearing of perfume and deodorant as some people are allergic to these items as well as cigarette smoke.  Does Highline need a “Fragrance” limitation policy?  North Seattle Community College has had a policy such as this for quite some time though how it works no one knew.  Alicja mentioned that policing behaviors such as these  would get into the  realm of micromanaging people’s personal lives.  Katie Gulliford suggested that instead of  a stated college policy,  instructors could put issues such as these into their course syllabi should they wish.  Rod Fowers mentioned that Hospitals have policies such as these.  John Lindsay discussed handling issues such as these keeping in mind moderation, emphasizing that  we would need to decide how far we should draw the line on issues such as these.  He can empathize with people who have allergies to smoke, perfumes, deodorants as he has spring time allergies and uses an air humidifier in his office.  Phil Droke suggested that the Health and Safety Committee might want to analyze this issue in its entirety, using a reasonable approach.

Respectfully submitted,

Judy Johnson-Wise,

Secretary
