MINUTES – FACULTY MEETING      HIGHLINE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

May 22, 2002

Minutes:  Faculty Senate        Highline Community College

Chair:  Glen Avantaggio, Vice President

Present:  John Pfeiffer, Rebecca Sliger, Helen Burn, Tracy Bright, Geoff Truck, Maggie Brown, Sharon Hashimoto, Arlene Garcia, Mike Cicero, Jeff Wagnitz, Gwen Spencer

 Agenda:  1.  Probation Policies

2.    A.S. Degree Writing Requirement

 1.      Probation policies.  Gwen Spencer and a small sub-committee agreed to a limit of 12 credits for students on second quarter probation.  She reported that most  students have quickly adjusted to the probation procedure.  There is still a problem with tuition payment and disenrollment which is labor-intensive.

 2.      AAS Degree – for technical/professional education.  Members discussed how many students might be effected by the 2.0 writing requirement grade.  Though other community colleges like Edmonds and Seattle Central may have similar gpa requirements where writing courses are concerned, their program graduation requirements are different from ours.  Members will continue discussing this topic.

3.   Lonnie Kaneko brought to the Senate’s attention that  all academic courses listed in the catalog should be at the 100 level or above.  The Faculty Senate was involved in the language that describes course and what they are composed of.

4.  Jeff Wagnitz who is presiding on the board working on policies, including grading policies, will  take input from the senate to the Council on Councils to become formal college policy.

 Respectfully Submitted,

 Judy Johnson-Wise,

Secretary
