 1.  Meeting called to order;   President, Phil Droke

 2.  No new business was noted for the agenda

3.       Old business;  Probationary policy.

Faculty members continued the discussion on the probationary policy, its effect on the number of credit hours a student may take and also its effect on financial aid.

Gwen Spencer reviewed our probation policies and highlighted several  inconsistencies from first to second quarter.

Additionally, we need to make the appeal process consistent from the first to the second quarter

Gwen brought copies of form letters addressing probation policies, including:

      First quarter probationary policy

      Second quarter probationary policy

Second quarter “holding pattern” concerning probation

Suspension letter which notifies students that they can’t return to

      Highline for one year.

A Letter of suspension notifies a student that they have the right to an appeal on this issue.

A Second quarter probation letter advises that 12 credits, not 15 credits, should be attempted and that this issue also can be appealed

The first time around, we will need to use our curent  policies and then have students talk to faculty advisors if they are on probation.

Problematic is the fact that students  taking under 12 credits in a quarter are not eligible for financial aid, but  they could attempt an appeal if this works a hardship.

The faculty senate decided to form a sub-committee to re-work the policy.

Next quarter, Gwen Spencer will set up a meeting for sub-committee members Rebecca Sliger, Gwen Spencer, Maggie Brown and Eric Baer to work on these policy issues.  Because the faculty senate  wrote the policy, the senate can rework the policy.

            4.      Phil Droke, president, will be on leave next quqrter.  Therefore, Glen Avantaggio, Vice president, will chair the meetings.

 5.      Our next faculty senate meeting will be on April 17, 2002, 3pm

 6.      To be discussed at the 4-17-02 meeting will be the AAS degree requirements.

 Respectfully submitted,

Judy Johnson-Wise
