W/WI Committee Report
General discussion about the following concerns:
- What is the purpose of the W grade?
- Why do we have W and WI grades?
- How do these grades affect financial aid?
- How should excessive withdrawals be handled in a policy?
- Does the policy weaken student commitment?
- Time to completion an issue with the legislature.
- What should the proper timing of a withdrawal be?
- What are the advantages of allowing a later withdrawal? Disadvantages?
- How do these grades affect articulation to transfer institutions?
- What would be the effect of keeping the current policy but not posting the
W on students' transcripts?
- Do we really care about this?
- Need an open policy for first-year students.
- Need to look at policies at transfer institutions for comparison.
- Need to check with our departments to see if W's matter.
- Isn't our concern about students who withdraw too much?
- Is it possible to not have a record of a W grade after the 10th
day of the quarter?
- Are we doing a disservice to students by giving the impression that W's
don't matter?
- Confusing to students since some faculty issue W's and others don't.
- Catalog needs a student version of the policy - currently difficult to
understand.
