Observers: Josh Sieenaler, Bob Hughes, Kitty Richmore, Helen Burn
Handouts:
By Phil: Honors Option guidelines,
Vicki: Honors Program
Read through and see if it is clear as to what faculties obligation is after reading this. The only thing that was changed was that credits can come from all areas now, up to 10 credits may be counted in each division. No more than 10 may be used per division.
Working towards getting the information about the program online.
It is spelled out as to how to get students involved in the program now and it wasnt before today.
Mike C. : Is it up to the student and the faculty?
Vickie: yes
Dick: It is still not clear to me if the student must sign up for the program. Is there an application to participate in the program.
Vickie: Noted that she is unclear as to that. I am not sure if there is an official application or not.
John: Should not #5 read A student needs to complete.
Phil: Have the issues that Barbara addressed in her original message?
Vickie: Yes,
Phil: This is restricted to transfer courses.
Glen:
Bob Hughes: I would like to see some language clarifications.
If you are going to exclude such courses, then you need to clarify the exclusions in the document.
Refer to ICRC guidelines.
Phil: Other comments
John: write the symbol H and not the entire word Honors.
Phil: Is what you presently do.
John: Yes
Vickie: Are we in agreement to include all divisions?
Phil: Are there any objections to this? No objections were heard.
Change in the ICRC guidelines: (see memo from Bob Hughes)
Phil: read the memo to the Senate. Currently our degree requires three different departments within their division.
Bob:
Copies of the ICRC guidelines are available in Bob Hughes office. The 1996 guidelines went into effect in 1998. They suggest that you can have a 2 department instead of 3. Not sure if anyone has implemented the 2 department minimum yet, but knows of schools that will be doing that in the fall.
UW-T. .
Must have a certain number of courses in an area to matriculate. The issue
We are currently creating barriers for students transferring to the 4-year institutions. I would like to initiate this discussion with you today. He would like to see a decision made so that it can be included in the 2000 catalog. The senate needs to think of the implications of this campus wide and what does it mean for the services that we provide students.
Eric:
Can the issues that you are speaking be addressed using the AA option 2 or B?
Bob:
Depends on the department and the track the students are taking.
We are looking at more students with the option B now in the sciences now.
This is happening in other divisions as well across departmentally.
Phil: Have you discussed this with other faculty members in your divisions? Any feedback?
Eric: I will do that now with this information.
Bob: I will be glad to give an administrators perspective on this if requested.
Phil: Glen, you represent a department that may be affected by this. Do you have any feelings on this.
Glen: The only person that I have talked to about this is Lonny Kaneko. Talked about taking Spech 100 out of the division requirements, just as Writing has taken out the Writ 101 out of their requirements. Since this is a college wide requirement.
Bob:
Hui Ming: Should the other classes be taken out of the requirements? For example, the DG requirement.
Glen: I do not see this as the same.
Hui Ming:
Glen: Spech 100 is a service course for the entire college.
Jon: This is not going to be a consideration for most students in the sciences. For the most part option A does not work for the science students. They need to spread out the distribution throughout the 4 years, which they cant do and receive a option A.
Phil: Mike, what do most business students do.
Mike: Option A for the most part. Only a few do option B We count Econ 211 as an elective and the other Econ course as fulfilling the requirement. This would afford them more choice and flexibility in choosing courses.
Kitty: This would make it easier for students to emphasize. Why not just use the option B?
Bob: Not necessarily easier for students. It would give HCC more control and keep the focus where we feel as an institution it is being met.
Hui Ming:
Bob: I am not expecting a vote at the next meeting. I am just asking for discussion l
Toni: Worksheets Would like to invite the new Director for Educational Planning to the next discussion?
Eric: How would this affect advising?
Bob: Yes, it will make it harder for the student who doesnt do their homework. They need to research. Advisors need to be aware that they need to prepare students for multiple opportunities This is a fairly complex act. It is increasingly more complicated to advise students.
Toni: WE need to be proactive informing students of changes
Phil: Do you have any timelines for the catalog?
Bob: No. All contents are done, but with the changes in the PIO office. Also the presidential search is holding up the catalog. There are a lot of things holding up the catalog.
Phil: Will be on the agenda for the next meeting?
Toni: When do you plan for this to go into effect?
Bob: Fall Quarter.

Eric:
Miscellaneous issues:
Keith Paton asked if there is an opening on the discipline committee. Toni Castro stated the committee positions are all filled--Lance Gibson, Keith Paton and Ellen Hoffman. The website will be updated with this information.
John Pfeffer noted that there is an issue for AA Degree Option B students and the University of Washington regarding the number of credits that they will accept toward degree requirements. Bob Hughes stated that ICRC would need to get involved and that he did not foresee this happening.
