Pat Phillips, Secretary

MEMBERS PRESENT:  Phil Sell, Igor Glosman, John Pfeffer, Sharon Hashimoto, Glen Avantaggio, Han Lim, Mike Cicero, Maggie Brown, Jeff Wagnitz, Judy Johnson-Wise, Pat Phillips

 GUEST:  Gwen Spencer, Denny Stuessy

HANDOUT:  "A Motion Before the Senate" (from John)

John offered the motion outlined on the handout.  (See handout.)  The motion was seconded by Mike Cicero.  Discussion included the following:

Need to consider problems with courses transferred in - ex. Phil 120 and an explanation alerting students to the math prerequisite.

Lab science or just a science - the need for students to use the scientific method.

Need to keep this as loose as possible including the math requirement.

Everyone with an AA./A.S. in the state of Washington needs to take Writing 101 so should list this as a communication requirement.

 Term "emphasis" is confusing.

Should be very clear this is not a standard transfer degree.

Not wanting specific course requirements doesn't mean not wanting standards.

Why is it better to have very few requisites versus none at all?

What does the degree mean - need some assurance students know how to write.

The way this has evolved the student designs the degree.

Need to be aware of residency requirements and not overpad major courses.

Requirements give more value to the degree.

Want to explore the faculty advisor role.

John will bring back revised motion for the next meeting.

Phil:  Elections will be via  email.
