FACULTY SENATE
Minutes: April 4, 2001
Pat Phillips, Secretary
MEMBERS PRESENT: Mike Armstrong, John Pfeffer, Jeff Wagnitz, Eric Baer, Judy Johnson-Wise, Han Lim, Sharon Hashimoto, Helen Burn, Glen Avantaggio, Maggie Brown, Toni Castro, Bob Bonner, Dick Plagge, Phil Sell, Pat Phillips
ACTION ITEM: The members passed a motion calling for a change in the student withdrawal policy. The current policy, as it will read in the next catalog, says:
"In order to accommodate students waiting to register for a course, instructors have the discretion to initiate a withdrawal for students who have not attended at least 60 percent of the class time during the first ten instructional days of the academic quarter (an equivalent …summer)."
The Senate motion changes "ten days" to "five days".
The rationale for this change is that 60 percent of ten days means that waiting students cannot be admitted until sometime in the second week of classes. This is too late a date for most students to risk completing their registration in a satisfactory manner.
Motion was given by Eric and seconded by Mike.
Phil will pass this on to other councils. There was some discussion regarding the ten-day enrollment report and the timing of dropping students who have not attended before the ten-day count.
NEW TOPICS:
Phil: We need to take a look at Option B of the AA degree and the AAS degree. Bob Eley or Michael Allen will be invited to our next meeting to provide information on these degrees.
