Members Present: Maggie Brown, Hui Ming Huo, Jeff Wagnitz, Sharon Hashimoto, Mike Cicero, Mike Armstrong, Barbara Smith, Eric Baer, Helen Burn, Phil Sell, Pat Phillips

Guest: Gwen Spencer

Phil:

FACTC meeting report (figures on increases in online offerings managed by WAOL; problems with the system; new issues, i.e. who grants the degree?). FACTC minutes are posted on the senate website.

Helen & Mike A.:

Faculty Forum March 8th to discuss W/WI issues.

Helen:

Will reschedule the faculty forum previously planned in response to Allison Green's request Fall Quarter.

Phil:

Catalog copy has gone in. Worked with Gwen & Jeff to clarify and update language regarding the academic probation and suspension policy, the process for adding/dropping classes, and the W/WI policy.

Mike A. & Helen:

Led a discussion on waitlist subcommittee recommendations. Three general scenarios described:

  1. A full class that opens before the start of classes: NO CHANGE RECOMMENDED
  2. Class gets full after classes start: INSTRUCTOR SIGNATURE REQUIRED even if class later shows open.
  3. Class is full although not all students are attending: INSTRUCTOR FILLS OUT AN ADD/DROP FORM adding a new student while dropping a student who has not attended in the first three days AND TURNS IN TO REGISTRATION.

Members discussed pros and cons of each scenario. Points of discussion included questions about technical support needed, concern about arbitrariness in dropping students in scenario #3, the use of waitlists to generate additional sections, pressure on faculty from students on the waitlists.

The March 7th meeting was cancelled in lieu of the Faculty Forum scheduled on the 8th. An additional meeting for March 14th was added.
