Accounting is part of a company’s information system. Accounting
measures, processes, and communicates financial information about an identifiable economic entity.  Accountants engage in a wide variety of activities including:
 
bulletAnalyzing and recording business transactions
 
bulletDeveloping and using information systems to
track financial performance
 
bulletDeveloping information and cost reports at all levels
management to help managers in decision making, planning,
and controlling all aspects of company operations
 
bulletParticipating in strategic planning
 
bulletDeveloping tax strategies.

There's a lot to get out of a career in accounting. Because accountants spend a lot of time looking under the hoods of businesses they really learn how business works. It's no surprise that many successful players in business began their careers as accountants or have a strong accounting background.
