Evaluating Web Sites: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly

Why Evaluate?

A Few More Examples

Here are some more examples that prove the need for
web searchers to be able to evaluate websites.  Notice how the
names don't give a clue as to what the websites are supporting.

The Center for Consumer Freedom is backed by the tobacco industry,
the beer industry, bars, and restaurants.  This group opposes smoking
bans and lowering the legal blood-alcohol level, and opposes studies
showing the dangers of eating red meat, overfishing, and using pesticides.

organizations working for companies, governments, and special interests.

Balanced Energy: Americans  for Balanced Energy Choices
is a site where you will find information that disputes the effect
of human activity on global warming.  Before you use this
as a source, you might want to know that this website is
sponsored by America's coal industry. And would you
know this fact by the organization's name?  By the way,
coal is seen by most climate experts as one of the main
reasons behind the warming global climate.

The National Wilderness Institute calls itself the "voice of reason on the
environment." What it calls reason "involves challenging the Endangered
Species Act and undermining other wilderness protections."
