Evaluating Web Sites: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly

Why Evaluate?

Imagine you have a speech or paper you need to do for a
class and you choose Martin Luther King Jr. as your subject.

You go to the web and use Google, Yahoo, Teoma, or some
other search engine. You get back lots of results.  You look at one
of them and start to read.  Then you start to wonder.  Why does this
web site say that the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday should be
repealed?  Why does it call him a "beast" and say that he
plagiarized his writings and speeches?  What is going on?

What has happened is that you have gone to a web site called
"Martin Luther King Jr.: A True Historical Examination"
  (
http://www.martinlutherking.org).  What you haven't yet
realized is that the web site is sponsored by Stormfront
 (
http://www.stormfront.org), a white supremacist group which
believes non-whites are inferior beings. Do you think they
are going to provide balanced and accurate information
about Martin Luther King Jr.?
