Introduction

So you've just gotten an assignment in class to write a paper, give a speech,
or do a class presentation.   Your instructor tells you that you need to do some research
and that in addition to using websites and magazines, you are to use "scholarly journals."

And now the question is "what exactly are scholarly journals and how can I find them?"

You can't just depend on the title.  For example, Social Forces is a highly
respected journal that has research articles on the social sciences.  Ladies Home Journal
is not a journal, but a popular magazine about the role of women in American society.
And of course, the Wall Street Journal is not a journal, but a newspaper focusing
on national and  international news and business.

So, how do
you tell?

Scholarly or Popular?

The next handful of very short webpages will tell you what you need to know
about being able to tell if something is a scholarly journal or a popular magazine.
Just use the arrow below to get started.
