Class Calendar for Ceramics 172 Students Fall 2008

January

First project; using what you learned in Beginning Ceramics build a sculpture inspired by your favorite artist or artistic style.  Use whatever building techniques help you to achieve your goals.  Before you begin, do some research to inspire your work.

22nd - Project 1 should be built by today.  Refinements to your project are to be expected but the       majority of the building should be done to the point where we can critique it.

Second project, “The Tea Pot” Create a teapot.  You can build your teapot using any of the techniques learned in beginning ceramics.  Think outside of the box for this project.  The teapot does not have to function. Be creative, to be a teapot it has to have three things. Something you can call a spout, something you can call a handle and something you can call a lid.

February

3rd - First bisque firings.  Kiln operation demo. Each advanced student is required to learn how to operate the electric kiln. You will be firing your own work and assisting me with firing the class work.

5th - First glaze firing

10th – Project 2 should be built by today.  Refinements to your project are to be expected but the majority of the building should be done to the point where we can critique it.

Project 3,  How does music affect you? Create an artwork while listening to your favorite music.  While listening to the music pay close attention to the mood it creates.  Let this mood direct the art work that you create.  Go with the flow!

26th- Project 3 should be built by today.  Refinements to your project are to be expected but the majority of the building should be done to the point where we can critique it.

27th – Last day for wet work (if working with high fire glazes).

March

6th - Last bisque fire

10th – Last glaze firing - This will be the last chance to glaze your work (If working with high fire glaze).  Do not wait until today to do all of your glazing. History has show that many students save all their work until the last possible day to glaze; this produces more work than what will fit into the kiln.  If your work doesn’t get fired it cannot be turned in for a grade.  This is the last day for advanced student working with low fire clay to bisque fire art work.

12th – Clean up day. Last glaze fire if working with low fire glaze.

Finals 17th – 20th
