Career Information: Choices - Is the Nursing Profession
right for You?

Nurses are knowledge workers who use critical thinking to provide nursing care to individuals, families, and communities. The use of a problem-solving process enables the nurse to

  • Identify problems, concerns and needs
  • To plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for clients of different ages, various cultures, linguistic abilities and complexities.

Registered Nurses work in a variety of settings. Examples are

  • Hospitals
  • Skilled nursing facilities
  • Outpatient clinics
  • Home health care agencies
  • Clinics
  • Schools

Titles may vary by setting and include

  • Staff nurse
  • Charge nurse
  • Case manager
  • Care Coordinator
  • Research nurse
  • Quality assurance nurse
  • Infection control nurse

Skills and abilities that are essential to being a successful Registered Nurse include:

  • Clear oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving ability
  • Focused concentration when performing a task
  • Strong mastery of scientific and quantitative knowledge and the ability to work well with others .

Nurses must also be able to manage sustained levels of stress.
