Frequently Asked Questions
Requirements & Eligibility
I am in the nursing program. Do I qualify for the SSP
scholarship?
Sorry, but no. Nursing and other health-related majors do
not qualify for the SSP scholarship. You must be a major in the Pure and Applied Sciences.
However, you would qualify if you were a Biology major who plans
to transfer to a 4-year university to pursue nursing.I
would like to know if this scholarship is available to
international students?
Not at this time. You must Be citizens of the United States, Nationals of the
United States (as defined in Section 101 (a) of the
Immigration and Nationality Act), aliens admitted as
refugees under Section 207 of the Immigration and
Nationality Act, or aliens lawfully admitted to the United
States for permanent residence.
Do I have to finish the first quarter at highline before I
can apply?
You can apply any time. With your application you would need
to submit a copy of your most recent transcript. If you haven't
completed a quarter at Highline yet, your high school transcript
or a transcript from the last school you attended will be
accepted.
I was receiving the ESP (Engineering) scholarship last year. Do
I qualify for the SSP scholarship?
All of the ESP scholars have been grandfathered into the
SSP program. What that means is that you will continue to
receive your scholarship, and you do not need to reapply. You
just need to turn in a Quarterly Report form
at the beginning of each quarter.
Can I receive the scholarship and only take 10 credits a
quarter?
No. You must be registered for and complete a minimum of 12
credits a quarter to remain eligible for the SSP scholarship.
Do I have to qualify for financial aid to receive the
scholarship?
Yes. You need to have a current
FASFA on file qualify for financial aid in order to receive the
SSP scholarship. The amount of the scholarship is determined
largely by your financial need.
What if I don't have an academic advisor?
You can be advised by any faculty member within your academic
discipline. If you don't know anyone, you can
contact us for assistance.
How do I actually get the money? Do you send
a check in the mail or do I pick it up somewhere?
Once the funds are released by the scholarship
committee, they are then posted to your account by the Financial
Aid office. The award first pays any tuition balance owed by the
student. A check is then generated for any funds in excess
of tuition, which can be picked up at the Cashier's Office in
building 6. It takes several days for financial aid to post
awards.
Maintaining the scholarship
I was just awarded an SSP scholarship. Do I have to
reapply to receive it again next year?
No, you do not need to reapply. You will continue receiving the scholarship for as long as you are at
Highline and remain eligible.
You need to maintain a 2.5 GPA, complete a minimum of 12 credits
per quarter, and continue to qualify for financial aid. To renew your scholarship, submit a
Quarterly Report form
by the end of the first week of each quarter.
What happens if I fall below a 2.5 GPA?
If you fall below a 2.5 GPA, you go on probation the next
quarter but continue to receive the scholarship. If you are
below 2.5 the second quarter, then your scholarship is
terminated.
Do I have to reapply for financial aid every year?
Yes. In order to receive or continue receiving the SSP
Scholarship, you must remain eligible for financial aid. You may
apply for the FAFSA online.
Don't forget to indicate HCC as one of your intended
institutions.
What kinds of things are considered cohort
activities? Can I count my tutoring?
There is a list of suggested cohort activities.
Your tutoring hours will count. Cohort hours should be something
that involves interacting with other people, and that is above
and beyond ordinary class requirements. Ultimately, it is up to
your academic advisor to determine what "counts."
Can I continue to receive the scholarship even if I'm over my "maximum credits" at Highline?
The SSP scholarship has no maximum credit limit. You may
have to fill out a petition at the financial aid office, though.
