The "typical"
School Group Visit
|
Students arrive by bus, van or carpool and park across the
street in the city lot or on nearby streets. Once the group
is organized, come over to the MaST where you will be met by
a staff member. Many of the visits then start out in our
classroom, with an overview and perhaps a video on some
aspect of the marine world or Puget Sound. Then, depending
on the group’s age and needs, the students will likely do
some combination of beach walk, science experiment, like
water sampling or plankton collecting, and visit our touch
tanks in the aquarium. |

SCUBA divers can sometimes join us as well and with available
equipment, students, from the warmth of the classroom, can, in
real-time, interact with the divers as they swim underwater.
Although no food is available at the MaST Center, many groups bring
a sack lunch and eat in the nearby Redondo Beach Park. Total time
for most visits is about 2 to 3 hours.
Note—obviously we can’t predict the weather. It is up to your group
to dress appropriately. While the aquarium, classroom, and lab are
inside, much of the dock is uncovered and therefore exposed to the
elements. Also if we are going on the beach, it is strongly
recommended that the participants wear good solid shoes that can get
wet and dirty. Many students cut their feet when they wear
flip-flops or sandals on the sharp rocks. Boots are nice but are not
necessary especially if a change of shoes are available. When we do
have sunshine, the water reflects the light and can cause sunburns
even quicker than expected.
