Hood Canal and Puget Sound: Oceanography, Human Development and Hypoxia

In this talk I will focus on the hypoxia (low oxygen concentrations) in Hood Canal. Why is Hood Canal acting differently than Puget Sound? What could be causing the hypoxia? Is it humans, climate, or just natural variability? In order to understand the answers to these questions, we need to first understand some basics of oceanography and what factors control or influence oxygen in marine waters. We will also cover the scientific study on this condition: the Hood Canal Dissolved Oxygen Program Integrated Assessment and Modeling (HCDOP-IAM) Study. Please see www.hoodcanal.washington.edu for information on Hood Canal, hypoxia, and the study.
