It's elementary dear Watson: Genetics reveals truths about cannibalism, reproduction, and population structure of marine fish

Atka mackerel are the only Alaskan fish species that is harvested by a major commercial fishery and has a peculiar life history trait where males guard the developing embryos for extended periods of time. There are many aspects of the biology of Atka mackerel are not completely understood, including their population structure, their complex mating system, and their tendency to cannibalize eggs. I describe how genetic analyses has been invaluable for answering some of these questions, and why it is the ideal tool for sleuthing marine mysteries that cannot be answered by other methods.
