Co-Director, Program on the Environment, University of Washington

Marine Invasive Species in Puget Sound and Beyond

Invasive species are a classic example of a global environmental issue with local consequences. They impact our native ecosystems, economies, and human health, and demand an integration of biological, physical and social science approaches to understand and address them successfully. After giving general background on the variety of invasive species around the world, Dr. Secord will zoom in on non-native species in Puget Sound, what they are, how we know they are there, and what they are doing. He will then discuss a novel effort to engage the public in prevention of new invaders, and discuss the pitfalls of one particular approach to controlling them. He believes that this is one of many fascinating environmental issues upon which public action can have a genuine impact.
