Library web page redesign New Web Design All Big Phase 1 is well In process.  Topics for phase 2 include:

Creating a Table of Contents/Site Map

Library maps   Reference Medium The Library maps should be updated and spruced up.  These could also be used in the OPAC for location maps and for an on-line tour with pictures

September 23, 2008: Phil Sell sent Tom the AutoCad file for one of the floors to see if there is an easy way for us to use that as the foundation of the map and overlay our stuff over it.

Check all urls in bib records In Process Bib Maintenance Tech Services Small This project should to be completed before we send off our bib records to OCLC to update our holdings.

Tested ELink Checker. It has been installed on George's computer and he has been given an initial orientation to it.   After the initial test of our records George says that it might be good to run monthly.

Note: The built-in Voyager reports for this task do not work.

"Live" reports In process Workflow All Big This project has been bumped up in priority because many of the other projects on this list depend on having web-based reports of Voyager data.

Create a system that allows library staff to generate their own reports from Voyager online in real-time.  The system should also allow scheduled emails of reports to staff.  Scope: integration of html, php, Oracle OCI8 module, survey of staff reporting needs.  Requires assistance from IC.  The OCI8 module has been installed on flightline, but I haven't been able to get it to work (connect to our Voyager server).

Update - December 2, 2008: The Oracle OCI8 module has been tested and works!

Customized Bill / Reminders to "worst offender" patrons. Future Workflow Circulation Services Medium Create custom Voyager report to send bill / reminder to the patrons that meet some threshold.

Once a bill is send by Voyager, it doesn't send ongoing reminders to patrons.

Create an ongoing set of email reminders to send to patrons; the first one sent one month after the initial bill and then every 6 months after that.

An alternative would be to explore running the standard "Fine & Fee Statement" report.  This report prints/emails a statement to everyone that owes money.  Fran and I discussed this option on 4/30/08 and we didn't really.

Collection Development Workflow Automation In process Workflow Reference &  Tech Services Big Streamline and automate the flow of information used for collection development.

This project has been bumped up to a higher priority due to Jack's sabbatical.  Instead of creating a temporary solution to get us through spring quarter, we are developing a foundation upon which we can build.

At the ELUNA conference Tom attended a session entitled “Integrating Selection and Ordering in Voyager” presented by Janet Lute and Katharine Treptow Farrell from Princeton University. They discussed their use of OCLC’s WorldCat Selection service to streamline their selection and ordering processes.

It looked like a great system; I did not even know it existed. The following links have information about the service: Overview: http://www.oclc.org/selection/overview/default.htm.  Some tutorials that show how to use it: http://www.oclc.org/selection/support/default.htm

As a short-term solution, we are testing a form for the Reference Librarians to use to submit titles to Technical Services: http://flightline.highline.edu/libauto/safeReports/acquisitions/

There is also a sample report to use during receiving: http://flightline.highline.edu/libauto/safeReports/reports/index.php?data=onorder

Periodicals Weeding In process     Medium Streamline the data gathering and reporting that supports weeding discussions.

Tom has written a couple of Visual Basic function to allow us to pull information from the holdings statements (853, 863, 866) to use in reporting.

February 11, 2009: Our 853/863 fields have been reworked so that our periodicals holdings are in the correct format.

We are exploring using the receipt status in the 008 of the holdings record to record whether it is a current subscription or not. This will make it easier to pull collection development reports out of Voyager.

Gov Docs Weeding In process     Medium Streamline the data gathering and reporting that supports weeding of the Government Document Collection.

Several access reports have been created to give Martin the information that he needs for weeding.  Martin has pulled many of the very old items that have been skipped over the years.  Tom is working to convert the access report to a web-based report: http://flightline.highline.edu/libauto/SafeReports/reports/index.php?data=govdocs

This could be used to display meeting schedules, hours, and other information messages.

Catalog facelift. In Process Web Design Reference Small Apply the Library website design to the Catalog interface.  The new OPAC has been installed and the basic design has been implemented.

Still need to add additional links to the header, and add the similar footer to the library website.  Need to continue the review of what marc fields are showing up where.  For example the 082 call number is showing up with the holding information.

Explore Voyager features. In Process Voyager All Medium Research new features of Voyager.  Also, explore the features that we don't use.   03 3 5 2 4
Add SSL to Ezproxy server In Process Authentication Reference Small elibrary's "My Bookshelf" feature requires an SSL connection on our EZproxy server:  EZproxy configuration for My Bookshelf and SSL configuration. Also, the West Campus product requires SSL for some of their functionality.

IC staff have loaded the new version of EZproxy to a test server.  After we've configured and test the new version, we'll add SSL to it and re-test the system.

Transfer wordpress hosted blog to on-campus blog. In Process   All Medium Our public blog should be moved to an on-campus server.  It would still be a WordPress blog, but we'd have in locally.  The benefits would be: local backups, faster response time for both the blog, and for the library web pages.   04 3 6 5 3
OCLC Reclamation Project In process Bib Maintenance Tech Services Big The current plan is to update all of our holdings in OCLC.

Several clean-up reports have been generated (thanks Tom) and Technical Services is working to clean-up those records.  We've done a ton of clean-up to periodical and government document records.

Tom also watched a BCR webinar archive entitled "Syncing your WorldCat holdings with your catalog."

Explore Link Resolvers New   Reference Big We should explore link resolvers.   04 6 3 4 3
Delete old ebrary records New   Technical Services Medium Explore and/or develop options to streamline the monthly deletions of ebrary records.

Each month ebrary sends us a file of MARC records to delete.  The also send us the information as an Excel spreadsheet.  The records are identified with an ebrary number in the 035a of the bib record.

In theory, we could read the excel spreadsheet with php, load the ebrary numbers into an array, query Voyager for all ebrary records and then pass through them for records that match the ebrary numbers in the array.  Output a text file of bib ids for the records to delete, then pass that text file to Northwestern's bib delete program.

Explore Self-Check Out In process       It has been requested that the Learning & Teaching Center use Voyager Self-Check to track the circulation of the books and magazines that are in that collection.

We should explore the use of the Voyager Self-Check Out module.  Some of the issues to consider are how it would work with our existing security system.

Tom meet with Pat Daniels about setting up a computer over there for this purpose.  Monica has discussed ordering a barcode scanner with Fran.

Need to be determined: stand-up furniture for computer, location of computer, do we need wiring & power...
