Assignment
Well done with our first Quiz!! I will take some extra time to grade the quizzes to make sure that OWL did what it was suppose to do. You can expect a score and hopefully some feedback soon.

I realize that a lot of new material is coming at you quickly. This is definitely the way summer quarter feels. Hang in there, we are just about half way done!!

This week we will explore chemical reactions making sure to become familiar with the variety of methods for representing these processes. We will also delve into the gas laws.

Week 4 Units

Unit 5: Chemical Reactions

Discussion Prompt:

Let's do a stoichiometry problem together this week. Please solve the following problem and then describe how you went about it. Be sure to discuss how you determined the "mole ratio" and how you used unit analysis to solve the problem.

Problem: An important metabolic process of the body is the oxidation of glucose to water and carbon dioxide. The equation for the reaction is

C6H12O6 (aq)  +  6O2(aq)  >  6CO2 (aq) + 6H2O (l)

a. What mass of water in grams is produced when the body oxidizes 10.00 grams of glucose?

b. How many grams of oxygen are needed to oxidize 1.00 gram of glucose?

OWL will be off-line for system updates on Thursday, July 17, 2008 from 4:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

For this reason, I have given you one extra day to finish Week 4 assignments. Please plan ahead and have a great Thursday off!!!
