Happy 4th of July!!! We will begin this week with our first on-line quiz. The quiz will be administered in OWL, so it should be a familiar place for you to solve problems and submit your work. Quiz 1 will cover everything that was covered in the first two weeks. The questions will be very similar to what you encountered in your OWL homework. You have exactly 1 hour to complete the quiz. Please find a quiet location and try to avoid interruptions. You should have paper, calculator and a periodic table with you before beginning the quiz. The quiz will be available for you to take at any convenient time during the time time frame listed below in red. However, once you start the quiz you must complete it within one hour. Normally the quiz will only be available for 24 hours, but this time I am extending the window for completing the quiz in order to accommodate the students who have only recently received their OWL pin code. Please do not put the quiz off. I recommend that you do it as soon as you are ready. The Quiz will be posted between Monday, July 7th at 11:59 pm and Thursday, July 10th at 11:59 pm. On-line Quiz
We will then spend the week working on the fundamentals of bonding. Bonding is one of the most important concepts in chemistry!!
Week 3 Units Unit 4: Bonding (Forces Between Molecules)
Week 3 Discussion
Discussion Prompt: First Post: What is the difference between a covalent compound and an Ionic compound? Give specific examples to support your response. Second Post: Use VSEPR to suggest the shape of the molecule CHCl3 (Carbon is the central atom). Also state whether it is polar or non-polar, and finally what type of inter-particle forces would be present between two molecules of CHCl3? You will need to get through most of the chapter before attempting this one. Please take a guess, even if you don't feel confident in your response. We can sort it all out as a group!
