Posting PowerPoint on a Web Site (or Blackboard)

Posting a PowerPoint file to a web site or Blackboard can cause a number of problems for your students, including:

  • Extremely long download times due to large file sizes
  • Problems printing
  • Lack of file compatibility

We recommend making your PowerPoint files available on the web using Adobe's Acrobat PDF file format. You can create Adobe Acrobat files from most office computers on campus, as well as in the Multimedia Instructional Development Studio on the 6th floor of the library.

  • If you have a PC, you'll need the Adobe Acrobat Standard or Professional products, not just the Reader. Contact Administrative Technology at admintech@highline.edu or ext. 4357 if you don't see the options described below. For your home computer, you can try one of several free PDF generators, such as PrimoPDF.
  • The ability to Print to PDF is standard on Macs. Select File, then Print, then Save as PDF....

Making the PDF:

  1. Open the PowerPoint presentation that you want to convert to PDF.
  2. Select File, then Print... to open the Print window.
  3. Set the presentation printing options
    • The 3 or 6 slides per page handout works best if you expect students to print the presentation for note-taking or study purposes
  4. Select "Adobe PDF" from the list of printers available. Available Printers - Select Adobe PDF
  5. Set any additional print options (e.g., number of pages).
  6. Click the Print button.
  7. Choose the location to save the PDF file.

Posting the file to your web site (FrontPage/Windows):

  1. Open your web site in the usual manner.
  2. Go to the File menu, and select Import....
  3. Click the "Add File" button.
  4. Select the file you saved in the step above.
  5. Click the "Open" button.
  6. Click the "OK" button.
  7. Open the page you want to link the file from, and create the link to the new file.
    • Add the file size next to the link name if it is over 50K
    • Add a link to the PDF reader for students who don't have it

For information about linking from Blackboard to your document on your web site, visit the how-to or the demonstration movie.

Posting the PDF to your web site (Dreamweaver/Mac):

  1. Copy the file to the folder where you store your web files.
  2. Open your web site in the usual manner.
  3. Open the page you want to link the file from, and create the link to the new file.
    • Add the file size next to the link name if it is over 50K
    • Add a link to the PDF reader for students who don't have it
  4. Synchronize your site with the server, or put both the PDF file and the updated web page to the server.

Posting the PDF to Blackboard:

Small PDF files can be posted directly into Blackboard. Larger files should be posted to Flightline (see above) and then linked from in Blackboard. (Find out how...)

  1. Navigate to the page where you will be posting the PDF file.
  2. Click "Edit View" in the top right corner of the page.
  3. Click "Add Item" from the toolbar.
  4. Fill out the form in the usual manner.
    • Select the PDF file created above
    • Add the file size next to the link name if it is over 50K
    • Add a link to the PDF reader for students who don't have it
  5. Click "Submit."
