Student Success Stories:

| When
I think back on my entrance to Highline and my first few
quarters, I see myself as lost and unsure, but determined.
I had just graduated from high school and I had little
confidence in my ability as a student, and even less
direction. Knowing I wanted a college education, I enrolled
at Highline Community College and began in the winter of
2005. I did well in my first few quarters, but I knew I was
not reaching my full potential. In the spring of 2005 I
took a speech class taught by Dr. Barbara Clinton and within
a few days I heard about her honors program. The very next
day I decided to call Barbara, hoping it was not too late to
enroll in her Honors 100 class. I did not realize it at the
time, but that decision would be my saving grace. |

That very quarter I did my first
honors project which not only helped me to become more engaged
in class, but it also allowed me to form relationships with my
instructors. In Honors 100, I was able to better articulate my
goals, enhance my writing skills, create personal statements for
college admissions and prepare essays for scholarships. Barbara
helped me to realize my strengths and then be able to put them
down on paper. She became a mentor to me and an invaluable
resource throughout my years at Highline (and hopefully in the
years to come).
As I continued
with the Honors Program, I felt myself gaining confidence and
becoming more involved as I took a more active role in my
college experience. In Honors 101 I gained valuable networking
contacts and was given new views and insights into how others
were able to succeed through their own education and hard work.
The advantages of the Honors Program provided me with seemingly
endless opportunities and possibilities. I truly feel as
though this program is at the root of my college success.
Through Barbara’s mentorship I gained a more enriching college
experience, one in which I was able recognize my true
potential. She helped me not only to achieve my goals, but to
far exceed them.
