Project Ideas
GENERAL
-
Oral presentations to the class that extend the
course content in interesting and relevant ways, that require some
research and critical analysis on the part of the students, and with
students participating in a series of guided revisions before the
final product is presented; OR Power point presentations following
the same model.
-
Research of a topic of interest relevant to the
course, exploring the primary literature, and producing a report,
poster, or presentation.
-
The lengthening of a 1500-2000 word critical
essay into an essay about twice as long that involves some
additional research beyond the course materials.
-
Arranging for a guest speaker, having presented
preparatory materials to the class, and then following up with leading
class discussion afterwards.
HUMANITIES
-
Research papers of personal interest relevant to
class topic (e.g. research on Rastafarian religion for the
Comparative religion course).
-
Researching a foreign country and comparing
information to the US (e.g. making up a graph comparing Hall & Hofstede
indexes for individualism/collectivism, high/low power distance,
etc., and giving a 12-minute informative presentation
comparing/contrasting the communication styles of the two cultures).

Researching and presenting about a relevant cultural
practice for
a Spanish class; leading a discussion critiquing the presentation.
-
An additional 5-7 page proposal essay, defining
a problem in the school, workplace or community that needs to be
addressed, developing a solution with specific supports to convince
the reader of its viability.

Presentation on the philosophy of anarchy, providing
background information and preliminary arguments, along with Rober
Norick's libertarian approach.
MATH / SCIENCE
-
Prove a higher level of calculus theorems and
relate examples to real-life situations in business and economics;
present this information to the class.

Read an additional book in physical science (ie.
on "emergence," central to astronomy and astrobiology) and present
it to the class.

Conduct independent research on a specific
aspect of geology, becoming familiar with the in-text citations and
referencing used in the geosciences; present findings in a 15-page
paper.

Research various aspects of cloning; present
results in a paper and class lecture
SOCIAL SCIENCE
-
Report on extensive specific participation in
Junior Achievement, educating and inspiring young people to value
free enterprise.
-
Gain understanding of specific immigrant traditions and culture by reading ethnographies and conducting interviews
of local members of the immigrant community; present findings in a
paper.
-
Apply microeconomic principles to a specific
decision-making situation in a real-world setting; present findings
in a written report.
-
Compare and contrast complex social science
methodologies used in specific research; present in a paper to be
critiqued by the class.

Research and write a 10-12 page paper (APA
style) on the role that teacher expectations play on the retention
and promotion of elementary school students.
BUSINESS
-
Conduct research and write a report on internal
controls, demonstrating an understanding of what internal controls
are and their implications on a business entity.
-
Construct a portfolio presentation of a
company's employee review ratings using histograms; use correlation
analysis to measure the strength of the relationship between
employees' length of service and their review ratings.
