The HCC Geography Department is committed to helping students to live in our globalized world. Students from every major and background can benefit from geography course offerings.

What is Geography?

Geography today is more than memorizing the capitals of  "foreign" countries. Geography classes at HCC introduce students to the basic concepts of geographical understanding--  the connections between people and places, the spatial organization of the world, and the processes that make our world work.

Why take Geography?

  • Geographical literacy is one of today’s most vital skills--whether you are planning a career in international business or just want to better understand the nightly news.

  • Cheap plane flights and the Internet make the world seem smaller, but it has not gotten any easier to understand. Geography helps you understand other people, places and cultures.

  • Most occupations today involve dealing with people from around the world, and geography gives you a great advantage. Employers appreciate (and hire) geographically literate people.

  • Many instructors expect students to have basic geographical knowledge. Geography classes can give you the background you need to do well in history, political science, anthropology,  humanities, geology and many other subjects.

  • Geography is an important part of Highline's mission as a global institution.

America's most prominent Geographer says: "Whether we like it or not, the United States as the end-of-the-century’s sole superpower is involved from Kosovo to Korea and from Taiwan to Timbuktu, and geographic knowledge translates into the effective use of the power this nation wields."
