What is an Honors Option Project?

Highline Community College offers students an opportunity to earn Honors credit in many of our classes  by completing an Honors Option Project.

Our program  allows the student who plans to earn at least  a  3.5 in a course to extend the curriculum and learning of a course with  an Honors Option Project.  In my courses the content of the project is negotiated  between myself and the student.   How big of a project?  As a guideline the project will likely take at least 20 hours for reading, research, preparation, writing etc.

Read more about Honors Option Projects on the Highline Honors Website.

Who may attempt an Honors Option Project?

In my classes any student who will be attempting to earn at least a 3.5 may try to earn the additional Honors credit.

What happens if I don't earn a 3.5?

This is different for different instructors.  In my classes a student who successfully completes an Honors Option Project but does not earn a 3.5 for the course  will receive extra credit equivalent to no more than 5% of the point base of the course.   The exact amount will be at my discretion.

How do I complete an Honors project?

Follow the timeline for this class, and work closely with the instructor.  A typical timeline will be like this:

Week 1-3 :  Meet with the instructor to ask questions,  discuss ideas for your project, and work out a rough plan.
Week 4:  Project outline and Honors Option Form due.
Week 5-8:  Exploration, research, writing, consultation with instructor, completion of project.
Week 9:  Project accepted, or returned for revisions. (I will probably ask  you to make revisions.  Plan on it.)
Week 10: Final project with revisions submitted.

What happens after  I earn the Honors Option credit

Once a student has earned an Honors Option there are a number of possible choices:

1.  Do nothing more.  Congratulations on earning Honors credit for a college-level course.

2.  Earn more Honors credits by completing more Honors Options in other classes.  More congratulations.

3.  Earn 30 Honors Option Credits in addition to completing Honors 100, Honors 101, and Honors 299, and graduate as an Honors Scholar.   Very big congratulations.  Find out more on the Highline Honors Website.
