Faculty Learning Community Principles
Welcome to the world of Faculty Learning Communities. This is a
primer on the basic philosophy and workings of the communities.
COMMITMENT
Being there is everything. Building community requires time
together on a regular basis. It is essential that members have made
firm commitments to their participation throughout the entire
process. A practice of arriving late, occasional absences – even by
just one member – diminishes the experience for all members.
NON-ATTRIBUTION
All members must agree to a policy of non-attribution. The
promise of confidentiality allows members to let their guard down
and relate to each other in an honest and open way.
PROCESS
Process is the means and the end. Community-building is the
primary goal. Products are secondary.
AUTONOMY
Topics are purposely vague so that communities define their own
mission. The Faculty Resource Center provides support as needed.
WHAT WE’RE NOT
This is not a committee. The facilitator is not a chair. All
members are equally responsible for the community’s experience.
