Paraeducator Program

This program offers a 45 credit certificate and/or 90 credit AAS degree. The Paraeducator Program option prepares students to work in schools and educational settings that serve learners from infancy through 21 years. There is a strong emphasis on supporting learners who are experiencing delays, have disabilities, and/or those who are learning English. Courses are based upon the Washington State Core Competencies for Paraeducators and the Washington State Skill Standards.

SPECIAL EDUCATION/ INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE & EDUCATION: SPECIAL EDUCATION/ EDUCATIONAL PARAPROFESSIONAL

Opportunities for paraeducators have increased rapidly and are predicted to continue growing. Highline Community College's certificate and degree program prepare students to work in local school districts and a variety of other programs such as parks and recreation, supported living and early childhood special needs. Students participate in a diverse program that includes theory, hands-on-learning, small group work, observation and field-based practicum experience. Through these learning experiences, students will develop the technical skills and competencies needed for successful employment in the field. Students may begin the program any quarter, may attend full time or part-time and may attend day or evening classes with some classes offered on Saturday. There may also be some tele-course options available. Students should see an Education Department advisor for scheduling options.

Education 140 and Education 240 (Cooperative Education) are field-based practicum courses. These classes are offered fall, winter and spring quarters. Permission is required to enroll. Students should see an Education Department Advisor the quarter prior to enrolling in Cooperative Education.
