This program offers a 45 credit
certificate and/or 90 credit AAS degree. The Paraeducator Program option
prepares students to work in schools and educational settings that serve
learners from infancy through 21 years. There is a strong emphasis on
supporting learners who are experiencing delays, have disabilities,
and/or those who are learning English. Courses are based upon the
Washington State Core Competencies for Paraeducators and the Washington
State Skill Standards. |
Paraeducator Programs and Courses
SPECIAL EDUCATION/ INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE &
EDUCATION: SPECIAL EDUCATION/ EDUCATIONAL PARAPROFESSIONAL
Opportunities for paraeducators have increased
rapidly and are predicted to continue growing. Highline Community
College's certificate and degree program prepare students to work in
local school districts and a variety of other programs such as parks
and recreation, supported living and early childhood special needs.
Students participate in a diverse program that includes theory,
hands-on-learning, small group work, observation and field-based
practicum experience. Through these learning experiences, students
will develop the technical skills and competencies needed for
successful employment in the field. Students may begin the program
any quarter, may attend full time or part-time and may attend day or
evening classes with some classes offered on Saturday. There may
also be some tele-course options available. Students should see an
Education Department advisor for
scheduling options.
Education 140 and Education 240 (Cooperative Education) are
field-based practicum courses. These classes are offered fall,
winter and spring quarters. Permission is required to enroll.
Students should see an Education Department Advisor the quarter
prior to enrolling in Cooperative Education.
