Advising Information

Students come to our Education department for many reasons. Many students come to Highline for just a few courses to help them provide better care for the children in their family day care home. Some people want coursework to assist them in home schooling their children. Others want to become a teacher, paraeducator/paraprofessional (district instructional aide), or work in a preschool or childcare center.

Most people eventually desire a 1 year certificate or two year degree in order to become employed as a paraeducator in the classroom or a head teacher in a day care center or preschool setting. We offer the Child Care Provider certificate and the A.A.S. degree in Education: Early Childhood to fill this need. Our Special Education/Instructional Aide certificate and our A.A.S. degree in Education: Special Education/Educational Paraprofessional allows students to work in local school districts, parks and recreation, supported living settings and early childhood special needs programs.

Our transfer Associate of Arts degree allows students to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a bachelor’s degree and become a teacher in the elementary, junior high or high schools. Many of these students go on to complete master’s degrees in education in order to specialize even further.

The unique feature of our department is that we allow students to take as few or as many classes as they find useful. We encourage students to add to their growing knowledge base and to pursue more education, both formal and informal. Our program allows a student to study for 1 year and get a job. They can then come back later and add to that certificate and receive an Associate in Applied Science degree or a transfer Associate of Arts degree. They can then transfer and add even more education to their resume, increasing their potential for advancement.

Whatever the reason for taking courses at Highline, our faculty can help you choose the coursework that best suits your needs. Since requirements for our degrees and transfer requirements change every so often, your best bet for up-to-the-minute details is to check with one of our faculty advisors.

To get the best advising information, please contact one of our Education Faculty Instructors (see table above).

If you are a new student and have already contacted an advisor or know the course you need, please call our admissions office for a time to register at 206-878-3710, ext. 3363. You may also find it beneficial to take the Compass assessment test for class placement. Please schedule an appointment for Compass with the Entry Services department at x3181.
