Weathering:
  • How does physical weathering differ from chemical weathering?  What is different about the changes they produce in rock?

  • Identify three physical weathering processes and briefly explain how each one is accomplished.

  • Explain what produces joints in rock.

  • Name three types of chemical weathering reactions and identify the types of minerals that they weather.  Are there "byproducts" of weathering?  If so, what are they?

  • Discuss why rainwater is naturally acidic.

  • What kinds of minerals tend to weather more quickly?

Sediments and Sedimentary Rocks

  • What are the three main types of sediments?  How are clastic sediments classified? 

  • What are two or three agents of erosion, transportation, and deposition?  How do these geologic agents differ in the particle size they can transport?  Why?

  • Describe how grain size, sorting, and rounding change as sediments are transported downstream.

  • Describe how clastic sediments become sedimentary rock.

  • What changes does lithification bring to unconsolidated sediments?  Describe some processes involved in lithification.

  • What is cementation?  What are some common mineral cements?

  • What are the major types of sedimentary rocks?  On what basis are they classified?  Be familiar with the names of several clastic and chemical/biochemical rocks?

  • What is a sedimentary structure? Name and/or describe the origin of two or three sedimentary structures?  Why are sedimentary structures important geologically?

  • Describe how cross-beds form.

  • What is meant by a sedimentary "environment?  Where are some located?
