Web Presence Definitions
A Web Presence is a collection of web sites serving a common
purpose. Highlines web activity is comprised of three distinct web presences:
Public Web
Purpose
A public tool to promote the college and facil- itate access to student
services, educational opportunities, and college activities.
Examples:
- Student life
- Information about on-campus events and activities
- Policies and procedures impacting external/public audiences
- Jobs/hiring process
- Faculty qualifications
- Course descriptions, information, and advertising
- Directory information
- Directions to campus and maps
- College calendar (non-event
when do classes start, last day to withdrawal,
etc.)
- Transcripts, schedule, on-line student info, degree audit,
financial aid, etc.
- Class schedule (including CEL)
- Costs/Tuition and fees
- Advertising for various on-campus activities
- How to do touch tone registration
- Web payment
- Who to call for what
- Search tool
- Degrees and programs offered
- Press releases
- Community interest
Audience
- Students enrolling decisions, potential
- Faculty Learning about other instructors courses
- Staff/Administration Advising students, general course information.
- Potential faculty/staff
Governing Principles
- The office/department responsible for providing information keeps it current
on the site
- Presentation will be consistent with the public web page development standards
Relationship to other webs
- Some information will cross between web presences, in such instances the
information will be housed on the more public site and accessed via links
- To the extent possible, information will not be duplicated

Campus Intranet
Purpose
An internal tool to facilitate campus operations

- Drafts
- Operating and business
- Personnel Activities

- Staff personal web sites
- Email access
- Campus communication
Audience
- Campus faculty and staff - on/off campus
- Board members
- Student government, Team Highline, Clubs/organizations (Business aspects,
e.g., purchasing)

Direct Instruction Web
Purpose
A college tool to support direct teaching and learning activities
Examples:
- Students using course materials (online and/or supplemental).
- Faculty communication tool: Faculty to students; student to student
- Text pages
- Multimedia
- Encourage faculty peer learning.
- Access to supplemental resources, e.g. library(s), electronic resources,
and services
- Access to online tutoring
Audience
- Students enrolled.
- Faculty current instructors of a course.
- Staff tutoring and assisting with courses.
- Administrators observation of specific instructors tenure
and post-tenure.
Governing Principles
- Academic Freedom and Freedom of Inquiry are primary principles
- The person/department responsible for providing information keeps it current
on the site
- Presentation will be consistent with the direct instruction web page development
standards
