Information For New Web Authors

New to web authoring at Highline? This page discusses how to get started as a department designated web author.  Consider using the template already developed to meet the web standards.  Instructions and tips are available online.

1. Find out who matters most

The most important person to talk to when you've just been assigned or hired to work on a department web site is the Web Manager for that area. The Quick Reference Guide can help you determine who that is. Look on the left side of the chart at the top of the page for your part of the campus (Administration, Student Services, Instruction, etc).

The Web Manager is the liaison for all web activities in that area. They can help you get access to the web site that you'll be editing, discuss any important policies or committees that you should know about while you're creating that site, and point you to the best training resources.

2. What Web Presence Are You Working On?

Highline has identified three major Web Presences, which correspond to three different sets of reasons that someone would be looking for information on the web. The most important people in the life of a web author are the members of your audience. Who is the site for? What people are going to be coming to the site, and what information will they be searching for?

The answers to those questions will help you identify the best Web Presence for your site. See the Web Committee's descriptions of the three Web Presences to help you determine where your site best fits. And talk to your Web Manager. They can help you decide.

3. Learn Web Authoring Skills

If you already know how to edit web pages, then working with the area's Web Manager is the most important thing you can do. Also, review this site, especially the Web Standards for the presence you're site will be in, and the Policies and Procedures information.

If you're just learning to author web pages, then the Technology Passport's series on Web Authoring at Highline is your best bet. These sessions will cover web editing skills for Highline staff, and include instruction on how to create pages that meet Highline's Web Standards. The Training page on this site also has information on other classes and on-line training.

4. Get to work!

Start building your site! Consider using the template already developed to meet the web standards.  Instructions and tips are available online. The best way to learn this is to begin building a site. The Instructional Design department is available to provide one-on-one assistance with building sites to meet the needs of your audience and to meet Highline's Web Standards. And remember, your web manager and this web site are the best resources for more information.
