Speech 213-- Presentation Skills
Student Learning Outcomes

As a result of this course students will be able to:
1. Identify and
demonstrate effective strategies for constructing well-researched,
well-organized, and well-written
informative and persuasive speeches. 2. Identify and demonstrate effective strategies for constructing a group
presentation. 3. Analyze varied audience types and directly apply results to presentations.
4. Integrate presentation skills with a service learning project that
emphasizes diversity and/or community outreach. 5. Identify and demonstrate use of technology to enhance and/or improve
presentations, such as videotaping or PowerPoint. 6. Display increased comfort and/or confidence delivering presentations to
diverse audiences.

Student Learning Outcomes (for 2003-5)
Think critically, constructing and deconstructing
arguments from different points of view.
- Analyze the "other" that is the focus of the class
(audience).
- Gain knowledge of the "self" in order to facilitate
meaningful and effective identity management.
- Explain the value of community
involvement/action/outreach, including the concept of reciprocity.
- Explain the connection between public speaking skills
and active civic participation.
- Demonstrate how audience analysis produces more
effective presentations.
- Use audience feedback to improve public presentations.
- Use concrete reasons to support claims.
- Design effective group presentations
- Display confidence delivering a presentation to an
unfamiliar group.
Measures
In Fall 2004 outcomes 2, 4, and 10 were the focus for the quarter.
Outcome 2 was assessed through a presentation, outcomes 4 & 10 an essay
assignment was given.
