Culture, Gender and Global Studies Department
Part of the Social Science Division
The mission of the Department of Culture, Gender and Global Studies is to
improve the lives of students and their communities through education. We offer
courses that examine the dynamics of culture and gender in a multicultural,
global context. CGG courses provide the opportunity for students to develop
skills needed for productive living in a diverse world and the wide experience
which contributes to the pursuit of equity and tolerance.
Student Outcomes
- Analyze, contrast, and synthesize diverse values and experiences,
especially historically marginalized positions.
- Participate in public discourse about culture, gender, race, class, sexual
orientation, ethnicity, and other socially defined sources of identity with
self-conviction and respect for others.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the historical, social, and personal
dynamics of race, gender, culture, class, sexual orientation and ethnicity.
- Identify and examine critical stances and modes of inquiry
- Apply the above skills to their own experience.
Department Outcomes
- Offer a curriculum that allows students to examine issues of culture and
gender in a multicultural, global context from multiple approaches, on
multiple topics and through multiple, interdisciplinary lenses.
- Encourage students to enhance their abilities to analyze, contrast and
synthesize diverse values and experiences, especially historically
marginalized positions, and to participate in public discourse on topics of
culture and gender (in a multicultural, global context) with self-conviction
and respect for others.
- Provide the campus and community with opportunities to learn about and
discuss the dynamics of culture and gender in global context.
- Provide faculty members across campus with opportunities to learn about
ways to incorporate issues related to culture, gender, race, ethnicity,
class, and sexual orientation into their courses.
- Promote the professional development of CGG Department faculty, in both
content areas and pedagogy
